Day 1: Tuesday February 4, 2014
São Paulo / Londrina

Arrival at São Paulo

Morning visit the Canadian Embassy – Presentation on Brazilian Agricultural Industry.

Coach transfer from the Canadian Embassy to Sao Paulo airport to catch your flight to Londrina.

The rest of the day is at leisure to relax at the hotel or to explore Londrina on your own. Your Brazilian guide will recommend the best area to visit downtown Londrina.

ABOUT SAO PAULO:

Sao Paulo is the largest city in Brazil, the largest city in the southern hemisphere and the Americas and the world's seventh largest city by population.

São Paulo is the capital of the state of São Paulo, It exerts strong regional influence in commerce, finance, arts and entertainment and a strong international influence.

 

ABOUT LONDRINA:

Londrina is the 3rd largest town in Southern Brazil, home to more than 500,000 people. It was founded in the 1920´s by European settlers from the United Kingdom and Italy. Londrina’s economic growth was based around coffee and this still continues to be Londrina's major economic driver. However Agricultural production has diversified beyond coffee, and today corn, wheat, cotton, sugar cane and soy bean production has thrived due to the rich Northern Paraná soil.

 

 

Day 2: Wednesday February 5, 2014

Morning visit the Soybean Institute: Embrapa

Morning visit to the Soybean Institute to get an insight in soybean, sunflower research.

Embrapa Soybean is one of 45 research units of the Brazilian Agricultural Research Corporation. It’s mission is “to provide feasible solutions for the sustainability of the soybean and sunflower productive chains, through research, development and innovation, for the benefit of Brazilian society”.

Its contributions to the Brazilian soybean agribusiness, places Embrapa Soybean as a world reference in the development of technologies for tropical areas. Its main contributions are: development of cultivars adapted to low latitudes; pest biological control, integrated pest management; soil management and conservation techniques; among others.

Embrapa Soybean is also in charge of the sunflower research program, nationally, and wheat research program, for the State of Paraná, carried out in partnership with Embrapa Wheat and the Agronomic Institute of Paraná.

Day 3: Thursday February 6, 2014

“Cocamar Cooperative Agroindustrial was founded on March 27, 1963 brought together by a group of 46 founders, all coffee producers. The goal was to organize regional production, receive and benefit from the product. Over time, the cooperative has diversified its business grew and is today among the largest cooperative organizations in the country, and owns the largest and most diversified industrial park of Brazilian cooperatives. Their region includes 54 municipalities in the North and Northwest of Paraná, with 11,800 members working in the production of soybeans, corn, wheat, coffee and orange.”

ABOUT CAMPO MOURAO:

Campo Mourão is a municipality in the Brazilian state of Paraná. Population is 90,460 inhabitants.

The city is predominantly agricultural. Its main agricultural products are soybeans and corn. Campo Mourão is home to Coamo, the largest cooperative in Brazil and the third largest in the world.

 

Day 4: Friday February 7, 2014

Tonight the group will be treated to a traditional Brazilian barbecue, prepared with a great variety of selected meats and side dishes. During dinner, you will be entertained by the South American folkloric show, this show represents the music and dance of Brazilian culture.

Day 6: Sunday February 9, 2014
Foz do Iguaçu / Curitiba

Morning tour of the Itaipu Dam

Itaipu is one of the world’s largest hydroelectric projects. Its 18 massive turbine generators, located in the powerhouse at the base of the dam, are capable of generating 12,600 megawatts of electricity. Built as a joint venture by Paraguay and Brazil, the complex of dams and spillways curves across almost 5 miles (8 km) of the Alto Paraná River.

The city is known to urban planners worldwide for its innovative public transit system. There is a great cidade velha (old city) in the centre which has been restored.

Ponta Grossa city was formed by the force of agro pastoral activities which became the second most diverse industrial hub of the state of Paraná.

The influence of European immigration is striking and is registered on the facades of buildings and old mansions.

 

 

 

 

ABOUT PARANAQUA GRAINS HARBOUR:

Paranaqua Grains Harbour is second largest grain port in Brazil and Brazil’s major exporter of agricultural commodities sold in bulk. Annually, Paranagua port of call handles 2 million metric tons of Soya beans, 7 million tons of Soya pellets and 0.2 million metric tons of maize. The Grain Export Corridor Complex, consist of 21 silos with a capacity of 760,000 metric tons.

CONAB focuses on 3 main areas

  • Generation of knowledge and information in the area of agribusiness. CONAB will provide information on forecast harvest, elaboration of production costs and price surveys.
  • Management of Agricultural policies by means of commercialization instruments, Federal Government acquisitions, loans and subsidies.
  • Provisioning stock administration and logistics, storage, supervision of the social and institutional programs.

We will have a presentation of role CONAB plays in the Brazilian agricultural industry. The presentation will focus on the Food Acquisition Program which supports the family farms in Brazil.

Visit a Dairy Farm – hosted by the manager you will get a full tour of the milking facilities and an overview of the dairy industry in Brazil.

Day 10: Thursday February 13, 2014
Ponta Grossa / Cuiabá

Visit the Experimental Farm at Ponta Grossa State University

The university runs two separate farms; one for research and one as a commercial operation.
Research is carried out on cover crops, crop rotation, warm and cold season crops, legumes and cereals, new chemical formulations and new practices.

Cuiabá is the capital city of the Brazilian state of Mato Grosso. It is located in the exact centre of South America and forms the metropolitan area of the state, Cuiabá is a modern, pleasant town of 500,000 that sits in the middle of Brazilian cattle country.

Visit to Bom Futuro Farm, from Eraí Maggi Seeds Group

Erai Meggi Seeds group is a large company that harvests, processes, and exports soybeans. The Maggi group is also involved in the infrastructure projects that are necessary to sustain the soy industry, notably soy terminals, highways, and waterways. Maggi is the world’s largest soya bean producer.

ABOUT PRIMAVERA DO LESTE:

Primavera do Leste is a town and municipality in the state of Mato Grosso in the Central-West Region of Brazil. In 2008 began an accelerated process of industrialization in the city, with the inception of an industry soy-bean crushing and refining the multinational Cargill, which will industrialize much of the regional production of soybeans, and market soy oil Liza.

“CEAGESP is a large warehouse terminal in São Paulo. They are the largest
suppliers of fruits, vegetables, flowers and fish in Latin America. The warehouse market is a tourist attraction in the city of São Paulo, which attracts hundreds of visitors during market days.

Transfer options:
